RON QUARTEL

  September 26th

Who is Ron Quartel?

Ron will tell you his life purpose is to "unleash the human spirit in the workplace." He loves all things software and nurturing business/development harmony in particular. His agile and Extreme Programming journey started in 2002, and over the years he has built strong technical skills and a deep understanding of agile methods. He has put this to use in several roles during his career: developer, development manager, and agile coach.

Talk: FAST Agile – The New (and Wild) Kid on the Agile Block

"Fluid Scaling Technology aka FAST Agile, is the outcome of an experiment in radical self-organization at scale. Not only did it work, but we also found it solved many of the issues that come with agile at scale that existing methods face. If you like Dave Snowden’s rewilding agile message, you are likely to see the promise in this radical new way of working built on Open Space Technology. Prepare to be surprised..."

Workshop: FAST Agile -  The Why, What and How of this New and Radical Kid on the Agile Block

"The FAST Agile operating model is very different to all the agile methods/frameworks currently out there. In this workshop, after getting a grasp of the core concepts, we will facilitate an exercise in self-organization at scale with FAST to get a firsthand feel for the power of this radical new approach to agile and agile at scale."

DELIA McGabe

  September 26th

Who is Delia McGabe?

Delia McCabe (PhD) shifted her research focus from clinical psychology to nutritional neuroscience upon discovering nutrition’s critical role in mental wellbeing. Delia’s research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, she is a regular featured expert in the media, and her two books, translated into four languages, are available internationally. Delia uses her psychology background, combined with nutritional neuroscience and neurological perspectives to support behaviour change and stress resiliency within corporates and individuals via online courses, workshops, and tailored events internationally.

Talk: Optimise Your Neurophysiology for Agile Thinking

"Thinking occurs across a sensitive and sophisticated neural network. Our neurophysiology depends heavily on lifestyle choices, which include the nutrients we consume. Other lifestyle factors, which include sleep quality, physical activity, and work and relationships, also impact this sophisticated network, although nutrition  forms the foundation of our neurophysiology. It is therefore the first principle we need to address if we aim to maximise cognitive strategies such as agile, creative, and flexible thinking."

Workshop: Harness Prefrontal Cortex Activity for Creativity

"Our prefrontal (PFC) is the most sophisticated part of our brain. It analyses data quickly, looks for patterns, and anticipates potential consequences and outcomes of actions. The PFC uses data to make sense of the past, via memories, skills, and knowledge, and to predict the future. It facilitates creativity by adjusting ideas according to circumstances and is therefore intimately involved in agile and flexible thinking. However, it is the most energy-hungry part of the brain, using 25% of the energy the brain requires, at only 10% of total volume. Without the application of specific and targeted strategies, the PFC quickly loses the capacity to concentrate and focus across the day, which undermines cognitive processing and output."

GIL BROZA

  September 26th

Who is Gil Broza?

Gil Broza helps tech leaders cultivate meaningful agility in product development. He also supports their non-software colleagues in creating real business agility in their teams. Gil has helped close to 100 organizations make Agile work well in their unique contexts by using his Right-Fit Agile system, which focuses on what really matters for agility: mindset, culture, and leadership. Companies also invite Gil for specialized support, such as mapping the Agile journey, facilitation of large collaborative events, and keynotes for internal conferences. Gil is the author of three acclaimed books: The Agile Mind-Set, The Human Side of Agile, and Agile for Non-Software Teams. He lives in Toronto.

Talk: Practice Does not Make Perfect (When It Comes to Agile Journeys)

"These days, almost every organization is on an Agile journey. And yet, most companies have trouble achieving real agility. Why is that? Aren’t the ingredients for effective transformations available to everyone? There is no shortage of motivation, established practices, detailed processes, ever-improving tools, literature, consultants, employees with agile experience, and certifications. Gil Broza, author of “The Agile Mindset” and “The Human Side of Agile”, thinks that one particular ingredient has been overlooked in the mad rush to adopt Agile. In this session, he leads us on an exploration of that ingredient and its crucial role in successful Agile journeys."

Workshop: Your Agile Blind Spot: What’s Limiting Your Agility?

"Does your Agile implementation produce meaningful agility? Too many implementations look fine, but they've really plateaued well short of their potential. They don't produce meaningful agility, which is: a good flow of valuable solutions to real customer problems; drama-free, affordable adaptation; and a healthy, collaborative, engaged human culture. If you’re leading teams (directly or indirectly), or are facilitating your organization’s journey, do you know how much more Agile they can become? What could be missing, partial, or misapplied? What it would take to close the gap? In this workshop with Gil Broza, we'll uncover the seven greatest (and often invisible) weaknesses of Agile implementations, and discuss workable strategies and actions for strengthening those areas."

IVAR JACOBSON

  September 27th

Who is Ivar Jacobson?

"Twenty years ago, I had been a creator or a co-creator of component-based development, use cases, Rational Unified Process (RUP), Unified Modeling Language (UML) and more. People saw me as a guru in the software industry. Life was a “dance on roses”!  However, I also felt that having gurus in a science-based industry, social and technical sciences, was unworthy of our discipline. I felt it was nothing less than “crazy”. Over the years I have identified many other “crazy things”, such as having a methods war, and the absence of a common ground for methods. Instead of attempting to create a better method, I have together with hundreds of other experts focused on recognizing and addressing the weakness in how we work with methods."

Talk: Some of the Craziest Things working with Methods and Frameworks

"In this talk, I will give a brief history of methods and frameworks and the “crazy things” we have lived with for 50+ years and still live with. However, there is now a change in the coming. The international standard Essence and its use cases addresses this situation elegantly. How? That is the key learning objective of this talk."

Workshop:   Experience Essence the radical new force in software – a hands on workshop

Essence is a revolutionary new way to think about software development. It helps optimize and improve your way of working no matter what practices or methods you are using, and is a freely available open standard. This workshop will help you truly get under the skin of Essence by learning and experiencing one of its simplest and most powerful use cases – a team healthcheck. This can be applied to any type of team using any type of development approach and will quickly and effectively diagnose what progress they have made and where they have any weaknesses. Attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and skill to repeat the exercise with their own teams. This is just one of many use cases where Essence can radically improve your development practices. It is hosted by Ivar Jacobson, one of the creators of Essence and a well known innovator with decades of experience disrupting the software industry.

DAVE SNOWDEN

  September 27th

Who is Dave Snowden?

Dave Snowden is CSO & Founder of Cognitive Edge and Director of the Cynefin Centre. He has pioneered a science based approach to organisations drawing on anthropology, neuroscience and complex adaptive systems theory. He is a popular and passionate keynote speaker on a range of subjects, and is well known for his pragmatic cynicism and iconoclastic style.  He holds positions as extra-ordinary Professor at the Universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch as well as visiting Professor at the University of Hull in the Centre for Systems Studies.   He has previously won a special award from the Academy for originality in his work on knowledge management.

Talk:  Estuarine Mapping - understanding the energy cost of change

The latest framework in the Cynefin family builds from the EU Field Guide on managing complexity in organisations,   It uses a whole of workforce engagement process to map current constraints onto an ‘energy grid’ to identify what changes are event possible over different timescales, and which changes produce the highest impact for the lowest energy (people, money etc) commitment.  The metaphor of an estuary illustrates the constantly changing ecosystem that is the modern organisation.

 Workshop: To be announced soon!

KEN PUGH

  September 27th

Who is Ken Pugh?

Ken Pugh helps companies develop software effectively by applying lean-agile principles and practices. He concentrates on delivering business value quickly by removing waste and delays in value streams; building in quality with Acceptance Test-Driven Development / Behaviour Driven Development; creating a collaborative environment; and evaluating return-on-investment. He has written several software development books including the 2006 Jolt Award winner Prefactoring: Extreme Abstraction, Extreme Separation, Extreme Readability and his latest: Lean-Agile Acceptance Test-Driven Development: Better Software Through Collaboration. He is the co-creator of the SAFe® Agile Software Engineering course. Ken has helped clients and presented at conferences from London to Boston to Sydney to Beijing to Hyderabad. Clients’ industries include financial, energy, electronics, process control, manufacturing, transportation, and retail.

Workshop: A Behaviour Focused Approach to Software Development

The behavior of a software application is what a user experiences.  This behavior creates value for a user – the ability to write a document, compute a sum, or draw a picture.   One way to describe this valuable behavior is with scenarios that show specific examples of a user’s interaction with the software.    In this session, Ken presents how to use these scenarios as both the requirements and the tests of a feature.  He shows how to decompose scenarios into smaller ones which can be more quickly developed.  Completion of smaller scenarios shows progress and allows for fast feedback.   As many organizations have found, the collaboration between customers, developers, and testers in creating these scenarios has dramatically decreased misunderstandings that cause delays and loopbacks.   This creates more effective delivery of the value that the software application provides.

CHET HENDRICKSON

  September 27th

Who is Chet Hendrickson?

Chet Hendrickson has been involved with Agile Software Development since 1996, when as a member of Chrysler’s C3 project he helped develop Extreme Programming. In 2000, Ron Jeffries, Ann Anderson, and Chet wrote Extreme Programming Installed. It detailed XP’s core practices, how to do them, and how they work together to help teams be successful.

Chet is the first signatory to the Agile Manifesto.
Since 2002, Chet has been an independent consultant, coach, and trainer. In 2009, he was asked by the Scrum Alliance to help develop the Certified Scrum Developer program.

Talk: What We have Learned So Far

"Many mistakenly believe that Agile started with the Manifesto. That a few guys got together and made up a vision for a better world. This is not the case. While it is true that they were men, they were not projecting into the future, but instead were reflecting on the past. The challenge of the Manifesto is for us to do the same. To look at what we have done and seen, using that experience to help others catch up and move beyond. In this session, Chet will discuss the things he have done and seen over the past few years and badly project where we might be heading in the future.

Workshop: Ron and Chet Small Card Game (without the Ron)

Join Chet to experience an  interesting simulation he and Ron Jeffries created many years ago to explore why we work the we we do.  You will experience some unexpected insights.

PETER COESMANS AND KATIE TAYLOR

‘Agile Leadership?’ What’s that about?

‘Individuals and interactions over process and tools’ is as valid today as it ever was. Yet, many still seek THE process or the ‘one size fits all’ fix to increase business agility. Business Agility requires a different type of leadership, one that understands, connects with, inspires, and leads people rather manage tasks.

Agile Leadership is not only about promoting change and delivering value, it is also about being the change. People are inspired by those who lead by example and actively engage in their own development. This is through action rather than words; as Gandhi said “Be the change you want to see”.

In this talk we’ll consider what makes an Agile Leader and give examples and ideas on how to positively influence others.
